USB-C Headphones: From time to time, the headphones began to disappear from the boxes of smartphones, and now the P2 entries for the accessory are almost not seen anymore, mainly in the intermediate models and top-of-the-line.
With that, Bluetooth headphones are gaining more space. However, many people still prefer traditional wired headphones, either for the practicality of not worrying about battery life or for personal taste. One of the alternatives to continue using the wired accessory is to bet on the USB-C headset. But will it change anything? Discover more about the headset with USB-C input.
Why Is There No More Headphone Jack?
Before knowing a little more about the USB-C headset, we first have to understand why the P2 headphone jack is excluded from smartphones. The first cell phone to exclude such a component was the iPhone 7, launched in 2016, followed by the Moto Z in the same year. The justification was based on an openness to innovations in the market.
The USB-C input on smartphones, or Lightning in the case of iPhones, promises improved sound quality for users, support for digital audio, and greater ease in developing devices with protection against water.
Another recurrent subject in the discussion about the justification for removing the component is the gain of space in constructing the device. Without the P2 input, smartphones could become thinner or other components, such as the battery, could be enlarged. But what happens is that the accessories just started disappearing from the boxes with the removal of the traditional entrance. This was one of the reasons why so many Bluetooth headphones started to gain traction in the market.
Currently, most manufacturers are adopting this standardization in their models, and the standard P2 inputs still need to be seen on smartphones.
Is It Worth Buying A USB-C Headset?
If you don’t adapt well to Bluetooth headphones or like your traditional wired headphones, you might wonder if it’s worth buying a USB-C headphone to consume your favorite content. And the answer will depend a lot on personal taste.
The good news is that the USB-C headphones are similar to the older ones except for the input type. USB Type-C is faster and maintains more efficient communication with the smartphone. Using this input will keep the experience the same in the case of headphones. Some of the justifications for this type of headphone are the faster and more stable connection with the device for sound reproduction. This type of accessory also reproduces sound digitally, unlike P2 inputs that use analog sound. In practice, this does not necessarily mean an improvement in sound quality. Everything will depend on the accessory quality and your smartphone’s internal components.
Among the disadvantages is using a single input for chargers and headphones. So if your cell phone is discharging and you want to keep listening to music, that won’t be possible. This phone must also be purchased separately since only some models currently send compatible phones together, which can be another problem.
Using Adapters
But if you like your headset, be it a headset, TWS, or another type, don’t want to buy a USB-C headset, or don’t want to adhere to models with Bluetooth technology, the alternative is to use an adapter. But here are some points to pay attention to when choosing yours. The first one is that the sound quality of your headphones may decrease depending on the adapter model.
But why does this happen? As we have already said, the P2 input uses analog sound, and the smartphone does this digital audio conversion. There are active and passive adapters. The first is more complete, more expensive, and has an amplifier and a DAC (digital converter) in its body that can improve the sound quality of the phone, but the main thing is that it will convert the audio format.
On the other hand, passive adapters do not have a converter attached to carry out this transformation and already need to receive audio analogically. This adapter will add a P2 input to your smartphone via USB-C. It may only work properly on some phones. Therefore, research your cell phone model first to decide the best alternative.
