But that will not happen overnight, because the road is long and the steps are small.
Artificial intelligence is used as a collective term for a range of technologies such as machine learning (ML), text-to-speech, natural language recognition and computer vision (machine vision). This research discipline and technology category deal with methods that enable computers to solve tasks that require human intelligence. Machine learning (ML), the most exciting component of AI, describes capturing and learning patterns in data. The idea behind it is: the more data the machine collects, the brighter it becomes – like a human.
There are already many practical applications. The most prominent examples in the consumer market are digital assistants for everyday use, such as Amazon Alexa and Apple Siri. The possible uses of AI are diverse. Forrester Research expects global investment in AI to increase by 300 per cent this year. According to a study by Salesforce Research, Germany is doing very well here. Fifty-nine per cent of the companies surveyed are already using AI, and 41 per cent expect growth in the next one to one and a half years. Sixty per cent assume that AI will have a strong influence on their company by 2022. In all likelihood, this trend will continue to intensify. Sopra Steria Consulting predicts that by 2025, AI will influence 70 per cent of all business decisions.
AI As A Trend In The Security Environment
With the automation of criminal activities and increasingly sophisticated attack methods, it stands to reason that cybersecurity can – and must – also benefit from AI. Most notably, this concerns learning behavioral patterns by analyzing massive data sets. In this way, AI can help security officers find unknown threats, automate SOC (Security Operations Center) processes, and improve attack response. As it becomes increasingly difficult to find qualified IT security personnel, AI can fill some, although not all, of the gaps left by the skills shortage.
Security professionals see the need for intelligent, autonomous solutions. Research is still a long way from completely replacing people with artificial intelligence, including IT security in many areas. However, AI can significantly expand the skills of specialists. Modern systems already use the capabilities of man and machine together, side by side.
In the security environment, there is concern that cybercriminals will routinely use bots and automated attacks in the future. Attacks become more and more sophisticated at a rapid pace. AI is therefore becoming increasingly critical in detecting cyber threats and defending IT systems. However, many companies are currently still largely dependent on manual processes. This must change if security is to continue to be guaranteed in the future – and more and more security managers are open to the topic of Artificial Intelligence.
The security industry has recognized this need and is looking to increase automation, better orchestration, and intelligent solutions to improve defense capabilities. This enables faster response to security events, better data analysis, and statistical models to predict behavior and respond better.
AI is an ideal field of application for cybersecurity. It’s all about gathering large amounts of disparate data to find trends and anomalies, whether it’s identifying spam or finding a channel through which data is being siphoned. The main thing is to manage the sheer volume of data. Therefore, AI is the optimal approach for accelerated, automated detection of security problems and anomalies in the network.
